Energy audits according to DIN EN 16247

Energy is becoming an increasingly important issue for businesses. Legal framework

Energy Services Act (EDL-G)

The energy audit in accordance with DIN 16247 is mandatory under the Energy Services Act (EDL-G) for companies that are not SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises).

This legal requirement came into force in December 2015 and requires companies to carry out an energy audit every four years.

From the date of the first energy audit, a repeat audit must be carried out by independent accredited experts at intervals of no more than four years. maximal vier Jahren ein Wiederholungsaudit von unabhängigen akkreditierten Expert:innen durchgeführt werden.

If you carried out your first energy audit in 2015, the next dates for your repeat audits are 2019, 2023, 2027 etc.

During the energy audit, measures are identified and calculated in accordance with DIN EN 17463 VALERI which may be published in the implementation plans under the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG).

Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG)

The Energy Efficiency Act has applied since November 2023 to companies of all sizes and sectors with a total final energy consumption of 2,5 GW/a or more calculated as the average over the last three years. This Act sets out the following requirements:

  • Companies with a total final energy consumption of  more than 7.5 GW/a must implement an energy management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001 or an environmental management system in accordance with EMAS within 20 months of the Act coming into force
  • Companies with a total final energy consumption of  more than 2.5 GW/a are required to publish implementation plans within three years, setting out identified economic measures in accordance with Umsetzungspläne zu veröffentlichen, die identifizierte wirtschafliche Maßnahmen nach DIN EN 17463 VALERI darstellen
  • Waste heat in these companies should be avoided in accordance with the state of the art or, where possible, (re)used. To this end, companies must register on the BAFA’s waste heat portal and submit the quantities by 31 March of each year.

Alternatives

You are exempt from this requirement provided that you have already established an energy management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001 or an environmental management system in accordance with EMAS, or have begun the process of introducing one.
